Police Warn of Potential Unrest from July 29 to August 8

Law enforcement agencies have issued a high alert across the country amid fears of coordinated unrest between July 29 and August 8. According to a confidential report by the Special Branch (SB) of police, certain “fascist groups” may attempt to disrupt law and order through violence, propaganda, and targeted attacks—both online and offline.

The intelligence report, circulated nationwide among police units, warned that these groups might launch assaults on events and rallies organized by anti-fascist political and social organizations, which have been active since July 1. The warning comes as the country approaches the first anniversary of the July uprising, which saw unprecedented violence, leaving nearly 1,400 people dead and around 20,000 injured. In the aftermath of that unrest, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several cabinet members fled to India on August 5.

To counter any potential threats during the upcoming 11-day period, police units have been instructed to launch special drives, intensify surveillance on political activities, and monitor suspicious individuals. Authorities have also been directed to conduct thorough searches of vehicles, including motorcycles and microbuses.

Security will be ramped up at key transport hubs, including bus terminals, launch stations, and airports. Both mobile and cyber patrols will be strengthened, particularly on social media platforms, to curb the spread of rumours and disinformation.

In addition, police have been instructed to execute all pending arrest warrants and maintain strict vigilance to prevent any deterioration of the law and order situation.

The heightened alert aims to ensure national stability during what officials consider a particularly sensitive time.
